As a sophomore (2009) • Started the season opener February 20 vs. Rhode Island and allowed just two runs and four hits in five innings • Worked six shutout innings February 25 at Elon, allowing four hits and a walk while striking out seven • Retired the first 10 batters he faced in both starts • Worked a perfect ninth inning March 4 vs. Villanova at Lake Worth, Fla., striking out two of the three men he faced • Pitched an eight-inning complete game on March 7 at Miami, allowing four runs on six hits while tying a career high with nine strikeouts, but took a 4-0 loss • Carried a shutout into the seventh inning March 15 vs. Maryland, but allowed three runs on four hits in the seventh and was charged with a tough-luck 3-1 loss • Allowed three runs on three hits March 21 at Wake Forest, with all the damage coming in the first inning • Settled down after yielding the three runs and retired the next 21 batters in a row and 25 of the last 27 men he faced in tossing a complete-game three-hitter • Did not allow a hit over the game’s final eight innings • Allowed just one earned run through the first six innings of a start April 11 at Duke in the second game of a doubleheader before running into trouble in the seventh and taking the loss • Worked two scoreless innings April 21 at UNC Greensboro, allowing two hits and striking out five without a walk • Started and battled through 4 1/3 innings May 10 vs. No. 1 North Carolina, allowing three runs on nine hits, striking out four • Pitched into the seventh inning on May 16 vs. Clemson and allowed five runs on nine hits, striking out three
As a freshman (2008) • Emerged as an effective weekend starter by the end of the season • Made four starts, all among his final five appearances of the year, and was 2-1 with a 4.18 ERA as a starter • Went 1-1 with a 2.70 ERA and three saves in 16 relief appearances • Earned saves in two of his first three college appearances • Allowed one unearned run on two hits in three innings February 24 vs. Appalachian State in his college debut, striking out five without issuing a walk to earn his first college save • Worked three perfect innings March 15 vs. Miami, setting down nine consecutive Hurricanes on just 27 pitches • Made his first start May 10 at Maryland and tossed a complete-game five-hitter on just 98 pitches, beating the Terps 12-1 • Started NC State’s first-ever NCAA regional game played on campus, May 30 vs. James Madison, and allowed two runs on three hits in 5 2/3 innings, but did not figure in the decision • Allowed three runs in 5 1/3 innings and got credit for the win in NC State’s 10-6 victory over Georgia in the NCAA Athens Super Regional
Summer league • Pitched for the Cotuit Kettleers of the Cape Cod League in 2009 and went 3-1 with a 0.84 ERA, earning a spot on the 26-man All-Cape League team • Made seven appearances, six of them starts, and allowed 33 hits and six walks while striking out 38 in 43 innings
High school • Went 14-1 with a 0.39 ERA and 146 strikeouts as a senior in 2007 for Coach Bruce Clark at North Gaston High School • Tied for second in the state in wins, ranked fourth in ERA and seventh in strikeouts • First-team all-state by the North Carolina High School Coaches Association (NCHSAA) • Named co-MVP of Big South 3-A/4-A Conference • Went 12-1 with a 0.99 ERA and 105 strikeouts as a junior in 2006, and was 26-2 with 280 strikeouts his last two years at North Gaston • Ranked eighth in the state in wins as a junior
