Chapel Hill, N.C. - The No. 44 NC State men's tennis team fell to No. 10 North Carolina, 5-2, on Wednesday, April 2, in Chapel Hill, N.C. The Tarheels swept the doubles, and took four of the singles matches over the Pack. The loss puts the Pack at 11-9 (4-3 ACC) this season, and UNC is now 15-3 (5-0 ACC).
NC State dropped a pair of tightly contested doubles matches at No. 2 and No. 3 as it lost the doubles point for the seventh time in 20 matches this season.
At the top spot, the Wolfpack's No. 9 duo, Jay Weinacker and James McGee, fell, 8-2, to the Tar Heels 10th-ranked duo.
James McGee and Christian Welte had their opportunity to level the match at No. 2, but lost, 9-7, to No. 42 Hardy/Donato from UNC. Chermak and Stephens lost, 8-6, at No. 3, as the Pack was swept in doubles for just the second time all year.
In the first singles match to finish, Welte fell to No. 83 Kearney, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 4, and Cavaday followed with a loss to No. 73 Hardy, 6-1, 6-4, at No. 2.
Will Plyler secured the win for the Tarheels, defeating Chermak, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 6.
Weinacker grabbed the first singles win for the Pack, taking down Donato, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 3, and improving his individual ACC record to 5-2.
No. 64 McGee's 6-0 ACC winning streak was stopped in a third-set tie-break by Benjamin Carlotti, 4-6, 6-4, 1-0(13), at No. 1. Stephens improved to 7-0 in ACC play with a win over Fogleman, 4-6, 6-4, 1-0(14), at No. 5.
The Pack continues its road trip, heading to Miami on Friday, April 4 to take on the Hurricanes. The match will begin at 3 p.m.
