The No. 44 NC State men's tennis team fell, 5-2, to No. 9 Florida State on Sunday in Tallahassee. The loss came just two days after a tough 4-3 loss at No. 27 Miami. Nick Cavaday and Jay Weinacker won in singles over ranked opponents for the lone Wolfpack team points.
James McGee and Christian Welte won easily at No. 2 doubles, taking an 8-2 win against Chang/Sykut to get things started. Mixson and Bailey of the Seminoles would win moments later, 8-3, at No. 3 over the Pack's duo of David Chermak and Derek Stephens to even the match.
No. 1 doubles went to a tiebreaker, as the Wolfpack's No. 9 duo nationally, Weinacker and Cavaday, fell in a tiebreaker, 9-8 (5), to give FSU a 1-0 lead in the match.
Despite wins at No. 2 and No. 3 against ranked opponents, NC State fell in straight sets at No. 5, No. 1, and No. 6 to give the match to the Seminoles.
Weinacker would then take out No. 71 Sam Chang, 6-2, 7-6 (3) to get the Pack on the board.
Cavaday took out No. 65 Clint Bowles at No. 3 singles, 6-7(1), 6-2, 10-6, after falling a set down to start.
NC State will close its regular season with a trip to Virginia next weekend, facing No. 1 Virginia and nationally ranked Virginia Tech.
