Raleigh, N.C. - The No. 45 women’s tennis team fell 6-1 to No. 11 Miami on Saturday afternoon at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center.The loss drops the Pack to 11-9 overall and 4-6 in league competition.Miami improved their record to 14-4 on the year and 7-2 in the conference.
The Pack got off to a rough start to begin the match as they narrowly dropped the doubles point.Catherine Grotz and Lenka Hojckova fell at No. 1 doubles, 8-1, to the No. 15 doubles team in the nation.Neils Barringer and Julia Roach won at No. 3 doubles in impressive fashion, 8-0, to tie the doubles point.Miami was able to secure the doubles point as Daria Petrovic and Berkeley Brock fell in a close match.After being down 5-2, the duo fought back to tie the game at 5 but fell 8-5 in the end.
The Hurricanes carried their momentum into the singles matches.No. 80 Romy Farah defeated Lenka Hojckova at No. 3 singles 6-2, 6-2.At No. 1 singles Berkeley Brock fell to No. 20 Laura Vallverdu 6-2, 6-1.
Bianca Eichkorn clinched the win for the Canes as she defeated Julia Roach 6-2, 6-3.Daria Petrovic fought back from losing the first set to No. 53 Michaela Kissell to force a third set tiebreaker. Petrovic was victorious in the tiebreaker 10-8 to claim NC State’s only point of the day.
Catherine Grotz dropped a 6-2, 6-2 decision at No. 5 singles against Caren Seenauth before Neils Barringer lost a heartbreaker at No. 6 singles.After losing the first set in a tiebreaker , 7-4, Barringer fought back in the second set to force another tiebreaker, only to lose 7-5 in the tiebreaker.
The Pack will return to action tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. as they host No. 19 Florida State at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center in the final match of the regular season.The match will also be Senior Day for Julia Roach.
