Men’s Cross Country Finishes 21st At NCAA Meet

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — Paced  by top 20 finishes from Bobby Mack and John Martinez, the NC State men’s cross country team used its at-large bid to the NCAA Cross Country Championships and came away with a No. 21 national finish.

The Wolfpack, one of just three Atlantic Coast Conference teams to earn a bid to the NCAA race, scored 473 points, with the low score winning the championship. Mack, a sixth-year senior, finished 47th overall, 38th for the team scoring, and ran the 10k course in a time of 30:25. Martinez, a redshirt-junior, was 49th overall and 40th in the team scoring. He ran a time of 30:26.

Rounding out the top five for NC State were true freshman Ryan Hill (83rd, 30:57), senior Gavin Coombs (142nd, 31:32) and redshirt-freshman Andrew North (170th, 31:54).

Oregon won the race with 93 points, paced by individual champion Galen Rupp, who ran the course in a time of 29:04. He defeated runner-up Samuel Chelanga of Liberty by five seconds.

Iona was second in the team scoring with 147 points, followed by Stanford (227), Wisconsin (229), Auburn (264), Northern Arizona (281), Portland (293), Oklahoma State (305), BYU (310) and Georgetown (319) rounding out the top 10.

Virginia finished 14th with 383 points. William & Mary, also from NC State’s region, was 16th at 412.
