Raleigh, N.C. - Even Hollywood couldn’t have scripted a better way to finish senior Julia Roach’s final home match of her career than what transpired on Sunday afternoon at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center. With the team score tied 3-3, lone senior Julia Roach was the only Pack player left on the court to bring home the victory on Senior Day. After splitting the first two sets, Roach and Jessica Wente traded points in the third set before Roach broke Wente in the final game to win the last set 6-4 and clinch the victory for the Wolfpack in a match that almost lasted three hours.

The victory marked the second highest ranked opponent that the Wolfpack have defeated in school history. The win improves the Pack’s record to 12-9 overall and 5-6 in conference play. The Seminoles dropped to 15-6 on the year and 6-5 in league competition.

The Red and White lost the doubles point to the Seminoles despite a great showing at No. 1 doubles. At No 1, the duo of Catherine Grotz and Lenka Hojckova were able to upset No. 33 Katie Rybakova and Ania Rynarzewska. After losing two of the first three points, Grotz and Hojckova rattled off seven straight points to win the match 8-2.

Daria Petrovic and Berkeley Brock lost at No. 2 doubles, 8-4, to Lauren Macfarlane and Jessica Wente. Florida State clinched the doubles point when Neils Barringer and Julia Roach dropped an 8-5 decision to Tapiwa Marobela and Carolin Walter at No. 3 doubles.

The Seminoles extended their lead to 2-0 after Daria Petrovic dropped a 6-2, 6-1 decision to No. 30 Katie Rybakova. The Red and White fought back with three straight victories to take the lead 3-2. Lenka Hojckova finished next and was able to upset No. 92 Carolin Walter 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3 singles. Catherine Grotz followed that up with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 5 singles over Tapiwa Marobela. Neils Barringer gave the Pack its first taste of the lead by winning 6-4, 6-4 at No. 6 singles against Federica Suess.

Moments later No. 72 Lauren Macfarlane beat Berkeley Brock, 6-4, 6-3, at No. 1 singles to tie the match at 3-3. The deciding match of the afternoon saw long rallies and incredible shots. After being down 5-2 in the first set, Roach went on to win the final five games of the set to win 7-5. After dropping the second set 6-4 and no more players playing, it was up to Roach to win the match. The third set went back-and-forth before Roach was able to break Wente and claim victory in her final match at home.

The Pack will return to the court on Thursday afternoon in Orlando, Fla. at the 2008 ACC Championships.
