Raleigh, N.C. – The NC State men’s soccer team used a goal in the 84th minute from sophomore Jorge Mora to shutout visiting Delaware 1-0, Sunday afternoon at Method Road Soccer Stadium. With the Pack’s (2-0) win today over the Blue Hens (0-2), and Friday’s 2-1 win over Valparaiso, NC State won both of its games in the Wolfpack Classic to start its 2007 season at 2-0.
The two squads had minimal scoring chances in the first 45 minutes of play, as the game was scoreless at the half. Delaware’s Paul Danaher had the Blue Hens’ best shot just 10 minutes in, as his shot from 18-yards out was punched over the crossbar by NC State keeper Christopher Widman.
The Pack had a couple of scoring chances of their own, especially down the left wing. Mora had two rips on goal, both were saved by Delaware’s Taylor Thames in goal.
NC State put six shots on goal in the first half, compared to four for Delaware.
The second half was played much like the first, mainly in the midfield, but did open up towards the end as both teams looked to break the scoreless tie.
The Pack’s game winning goal started in the back, as Phillip Foy won a loose ball and played a long ball up to sophomore Ben Ward. Ward got a touch on the ball, but Delaware’s Thames came out of the goal and collected the ball. But Thames was outside the goal box, and the Pack was rewarded a direct free kick from 19-yards out. Mora took the kick, and bent a low shot around the wall and into the far side of the net for the games lone score.
NC State finished the contest with a slight advantage in shots, 11-10. Widman collected his first shutout of the season with seven saves, while his counterpart Thames had five in the Delaware net.
The Wolfpack will return to action next weekend, taking part in the Duke Classic. NC State will take on St. Louis Friday night at 5:00 p.m., then play Villanova on Sunday also at 5:00 p.m.
