GREENVILLE, N.C. - East Carolina starter Kevin Brandt scattered three hits over 6 2/3 innings, and the Pirates used a four-run fifth inning to put away NC State 7-0 Wednesday night at Clark-LeClair Stadium.

The loss drops NC State to 19-18, while the ECU improves to 27-10. The lefthanded Brandt (5-1) earned the win, setting a new career high for innings pitched in the process. He walked three and struck out four. Righthander Cory Mazzoni (1-4) was tagged with the loss for the Wolfpack after allowing three runs on six hits in four innings. He walked one and struck out two.

The Pirates took the lead in the bottom of the second. Drew Scheiber led off with a double to right-center field, advanced to third on an infield single by Dustin Harrington and scored on a sacrifice fly by Jared Archen. Mazzoni walked Trent Whitehead next, moving Harrington to second. A single to shallow left-center by Ryan Wood advanced Whitehead to second and scored Harrington to give ECU a 2-0 lead.

In the fourth, Whitehead tacked on another run for the Pirates with a solo home run to left - his third of the season, all of them against the Wolfpack.

Brandon Henderson connected on a one-out single to left off NC State reliever Joey Cutler in the bottom of the fifth. Devin Harris singled to right-center next to put runners at first and second for ECU. Scheiber connected on his second double of the game - this time to left-center - to score both runners. An RBI-single to left by Harrington saw Scheiber cross the plate. Harrington then stole second and scored off a single through the right side by Archen to put the Pirates up 7-0.

NC State returns home to Doak Field at Dail Park this weekend for a three-game Atlantic Coast Conference series vs. No. 15 Florida State. Game times are 6:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and 1 p.m. on Sunday. All three games will be broadcast on WKNC-FM (88.1) and on-line at gopack.com through the Pack Pass package.
