Blacksburg, Va. - In the final regular season match of the season, the No. 49 NC State men's tennis team narrowly fell to No. 29 Virginia Tech on Sunday, April 13 in Blacksburg, Va. The Hokies won 4-3 after taking the doubles point, and battling until the final singles match, with the deciding point coming in a third set. The Pack is now 11-13 (4-7 ACC) and Virginia Tech 14-7 (6-5 ACC).
Christian Welte and James McGee were the only Pack duo to win in the doubles matches, defeating Pedro Graber and Brandon Corace, 8-6, at No. 1. Yoann Re and Sebastien Jacques took down Jay Weinacker and Derek Stephens, 9-7, at No. 3. In a hard fought match, the doubles tandem of Nick Cavaday and David Chermak, narrowly fell to Nicolas Delgado de Robles and Albert Larregola, 9-8 (4), at No. 2, giving the Hokies the one-point lead.
No. 64 McGee was the first to finish his singles match, swiftly defeating No. 40 Larregola, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 1. Chermak fell to Corace, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 6, and Jacques took the win over Stephens 6-3, 6-2, at No. 5.
Cavaday was the next NC State player to win his singles match, taking down Delgado de Robles, 6-4, 7-6 (7), at No. 2. Welte battled through to the third set to tie the match 3-3 with his win over Graber, 7-6(2), 3-6, 6-3, at No. 4.
Re secured the win for the Hokies in the third set, defeating Weinacker, 3-6, 6-4, 7-5, at No. 3.
The Pack will next head to the ACC championships on April 17th in Altamonte, Fla.
