Raleigh, N.C. – The No. 37 NC State men’s tennis team blanked the Citadel, 7-0, on Saturday, Jan. 20, at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center on the NC State campus in Raleigh, N.C. Junior’s Nick Cavaday and Ben Zink easily knocked off the nation’s No. 20 doubles duo, Daniel Dossetor and James Eason, 8-0. The Pack grabbed the combo point to begin play, and then collected all six singles decisions. With the victory, NC State moves to 3-0, while the Citadel falls to 0-1.
Cavaday and Zink flat-out crushed the No. 20 doubles tandem in the nation, Dossetor and Eason, at No. 1, winning in a shutout, 8-0. Senior William Noblitt and sophomore Christian Welte sealed the combo point for the red and white at No. 2 with a victory over Alberto Diaz and Frederic Petrilli, 8-3. Graduate student Daniel Schinke and freshman Frideric Prandecki fell at No. 3, 7-5, to Derek Jose and Martin King.
Welte flew past Petrilli at No. 3, 6-1, 6-1, to give the Pack its first singles point. Cavaday, currently ranked No. 99 nationally, followed at No. 1 over Dossetor, 6-1, 6-1. Noblitt secured the win for NC State with a victory at No. 2 over Eason, 6-3, 6-1.
Senior Andre Iriarte dropped the opening frame to Diaz at No. 4, and then played flawlessly in the second set and tiebreaker to grab the decision, 3-6, 6-0, 1-0 (10-7). Zink then topped King at No. 5, 6-4, 6-1, and junior David Rozek downed Jose, 6-2, 6-3, to end play.
NC State returns to action on Sunday, Jan. 28, with two matches at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center on the NC State campus. The Pack will start the day off by hosting the UNC Wilmington Seahawks at 10 a.m. At 2:30 p.m. the red and white will welcome a Winthrop Eagles squad that made the NCAA Tournament in 2006.
