RALEIGH, N.C. – NC State fell to William & Mary, 3-0, snapping a three-match winning streak at the Hilton/RTP NC State Classic on Friday, Sept. 12. The loss moves the Pack to 3-7 on the year, while the Tribe climbs to 5-3.
Arlee Tamietti (8) and Allyson Weissberg (6) led NC State in the kill department, while Alex Smith (11) and Allison Davis (6) combined for 17 of 20 assists. Kelly Wood recorded 17 digs and Aiwane Iboaya had five total blocks.
Ginny Bray led William & Mary with 11 kills, while Kim Mount put up 32 assists. Four Tribe players had double-digit kill totals.
State led briefly in the front frame, but the lead seesawed between clubs throughout the majority of play. A Jillian Brown kill put the Tribe up 15-14, and William & Mary held on for a 25-17 defeat.
The Pack took its first lead of the second set at 16-15 thanks to an Erin Skipper attack error, but it would prove to be short lived. Brown broke an 18-all tie with a kill to ignite a six-point W&M run before ending it, 25-20.
The third and final stanza featured each offense’s poorest statistical showing, with the Pack hitting .000 and the Tribe posting a .043. William & Mary jumped out to a 3-0 lead immediately, but State tied the score at 5-5 thanks to a Skipper misplay. Two points away from being eliminated, the Pack cut the lead to three but it just wasn’t enough, 25-21.
NC State will take on Western Carolina (12 noon) and UNC Asheville (7 p.m.) tomorrow, Saturday, Sept. 13, on the final day of the Hilton/RTP NC State Classic.
