A dream that had been long in the making became a reality on November 19, 1999, when over 19,700 screaming fans inaugurated the new home of Wolfpack basketball. The season began auspiciously, as NC State posted the first of its 17 home wins with a exciting victory over Georgia.

The dream of a new home for Wolfpack basketball began in 1983 when local NC State supporters, led by coach Jim Valvano, began a campaign to replace venerable Reynolds Coliseum. Funding for the arena began in 1988 when the N.C. legislature appropriates $1.5 million to be matched by NC State to plan for an arena next to Carter-Finley football stadium.

When the Carolina Hurricanes moved to Raleigh in 1997, a unique partnership was formed by the City of Raleigh, Wake County, the State of North Carolina, the Carolina Hurricanes, and NC State University. The NC State Student Aid Association raised more than $22 million towards the building of the new arena and ground was broken on the new arena July 21, 1997.

Walking through the front doors of RBC Center, fans and followers will immediately see the finest college basketball facility in the nation. With 19,722 red seats the Wolfpack’s home is among the largest college basketball facilities in the nation, while still maintaining the intimate feel of Reynolds Coliseum. More than 2,300 courtside seats have been designed in a pit-type area for NC State’s most vocal fans -- its students.

The $158 million RBC Center encompasses approximately 700,000 square feet and four different seating levels that is equipped with three concourses, 61 luxury suites, 2,000 club seats, 10,000 lower bowl seats, and 7,000 upper bowl seats, the arena affords the ultimate entertainment experience. In addition, a 9,100 square foot restaurant will be featured on the Club level with direct elevator access from the main lobby and excellent sight lines into the arena. Full catering service from an onsite kitchen will be able to serve 400 people.

With over 8,000 designated parking spaces located adjacent to the facility, complemented with 18 concession stands, 37 public restrooms and escalators and elevators scattered throughout, the RBC Center will provide the greatest level of convenience and accessibility to all patrons. NC State’s players also enjoy a state-of-the-art locker room, shower room, team meeting room, movie theater and training room.

More than 6 million people have witnessed NC State basketball in Reynolds Coliseum. From the time Everett Case brought big-time college basketball to "Tobacco Road," NC State has had a championship tradition that has covered four decades and includes two national championships. The RBC Center ensures that the Wolfpack tradition will be carried into the 21st Century.

There’s no place like home, especially when home is the luxurious, 19,000+ seat RBC Center, packed with a crowd that ranks among the nation’s largest night after night. The Wolfpack responded to the friendly confines of home last season with an impressive 17-3 record.

NC State ranked seventh in the nation in home attendance in 2000, averaging 16,535 fans per game. Following the opening of the 19,722-seat RBC Center, the Wolfpack led the nation in average increased attendance from the previous season with 5,735 more fans per game.

The Wolfpack drew a total of 330,709 fans in 20 homes games in 1999-2000. The average attendance for home ACC contests was 19,027. NC State averaged 10,800 fans per game in 1999, the final season in Reynolds Coliseum.
