NC State Student-Athletes Attend Career Development Workshop
Jan. 13, 2013
A group of NC State student-athletes attended a career development workshop, hosted by the AfterSport Group, Sunday evening. The program is geared toward enhancing the networking and resume-building skills for junior and senior student-athletes, and equipping them with the ability to present themselves to potential employers.
“Tonight’s workshop was one within a series designed to help student-athletes prepare for interviews, whether they are on campus or once they are done with school,” said Greg Hobbs, the Chief Operating Officer for the organization. “The goal is to provide them with tools they will be able to use for the rest of their lives.”
The presentation included an emphasis on six specific concepts, including networking and personal branding among others. A large portion of the program involved an open forum for the student-athletes to engage in sharing and describing effective communication skills in both written and verbal contexts.
One specific exercise during the workshop focused on student-athletes introducing themselves to one another without mentioning sports, but rather the strengths and qualities that they possess. A majority of the student-athletes participating were unfamiliar with one another prior to the activity.
As the program continued, key attributes such as appearance, body language and eye contact were focal points for the student-athletes to become more cognizant of when speaking to and meeting with potential future employers.
