Athletics Holds Annual Caterpillar Scholar-Athlete Banquet

    April 30, 2013

    Raleigh, N.C. -

In partnership with Wolfpack Sports Properties and the North Carolina State Academic Support Program for Student-Athletes, Caterpillar hosted a special night of recognition for NC State’s top academic athletic performers on Monday, April 1, 2013.  Over 345 student athletes, including 145 who were Dean’s List recipients, earning a semester grade point average of 3.0 or higher, during the Spring 2012 and/or Fall 2012 semesters were honored at this year’s Scholar Athlete-Banquet.

Eleven years ago, Caterpillar and Wolfpack Sports Properties – launched the Caterpillar Scholar Athlete-Banquet program to recognize student athletes whose performance was exceptional not only on the field, but in the classroom.

Ashley Eli of the women’s basketball team was this year’s emcee, and she kicked off the night by expressing her gratitude to the students, faculty, coaches, staff and administrators for their hard work throughout the year.  Eli gave special thanks to the event’s corporate sponsor, Caterpillar, for its continued support and recognition of student athletes.

After brief remarks from Chancellor Dr. Randy Woodson, Hayley Stowe of the women’s softball team gave the invocation, followed by Emily Pritt from the women’s track and field team, who reflected on her experience as a scholar athlete.

Jason Becker, Sponsorship Manager from Caterpillar’s Building Construction Products Division, based in Cary, NC, congratulated athletes on their achievements.  He then presented Marissa Kastanek, from the women’s basketball team, with the Caterpillar Award for Academic and Athletic Excellence.  This award recognizes the NC State Student Athlete with the highest grade point average that has also been selected as an All-Conference Athletic Performer.  This is the first year for the award, which will be presented at each Scholar Athlete Banquet going forward through a scholarship endowment provided by Caterpillar.

“It’s been a great honor for Caterpillar to partner with NC State for the last 11 years to recognize outstanding academic performance from the university’s athletes.  This year is special because we presented the first annual Caterpillar Award for Academic and Athletic Excellence.  We expect this award to be a coveted honor for NC State Scholar Athletes for years to come.” said Becker.
