James Greenwell joined the Wolfpack in June 2014, and currently serves as Senior Associate Athletics Director for Strategic Resource Allocation and Risk Management. Greenwell has over 20 years of experience managing facilities, events, risk and capital planning.
Prior to his arrival at NC State, he served as Assistant Athletics Director for Facilities and Operations at Georgia Tech where he managed all athletics facilities and events for the Yellow Jackets while serving as the point of contact for emergency management and construction projects.
Before going to Georgia Tech in November 2013, Greenwell served as an Enterprise Risk Management Analyst for Georgia State from May- November in 2013. During that time, he helped develop a framework to mitigate risks for the university and also served as the liaison for the state audit.
In the spring of 2009, Greenwell was appointed the Executive Senior Associate Athletics Director at Georgia State. In that role, Greenwell was the chief operating officer for GSU Athletics. He oversaw numerous facility improvement projects, developed an $80 million master plan and helped start football. During his time there, the football program transitioned from FCS to FBS and entered the Sun Belt Conference.
Before moving to Atlanta, he was Senior Associate Athletics Director for Facilities, Operations and Events at Maryland. From 1999-2005, Greenwell was the Assistant Athletics Director for Facilities and Operations at the University of Central Florida. In his six years there, he had oversight of several facility development projects, including the construction of a football team house, football field house and baseball stadium, and he coordinated the design of the $300 million UCF Athletics Master Plan.
Greenwell also worked at his alma mater, UAB, as the Coordinator of Operations for Bartow Arena (1996-99) and as a building manager and student assistant for the Hill University Center (1991-96)
A former member of the military, Greenwell served in the U.S. Army as an infantryman from 1986 to 1990. He earned a bachelor of arts degree in political science and a master of arts degree in military studies.
Greenwell and his wife Casey have a son, Dane (born in 2005), and a daughter, Ayden (born in 2007).
