Lipitz came to NC State from the University of Maryland, where he served as Senior Associate Athletics Director for Varsity Sports since 2007. As the Terrapins' primary sport supervisor, he oversaw women's basketball, men's lacrosse, field hockey, volleyball, gymnastics, and men's and women's swimming and diving. Lipitz served as liaison to the University's Legal Office, its Office of Student Conduct, and the M Club letter winners organization. He also chaired the Maryland Athletics Hall of Fame Election Committee.

Lipitz served as Chief Operating Officer of the Orange Bowl Committee for the 2007 FedEx Orange Bowl featuring Louisville and Wake Forest in Miami, Florida. From 1999 through 2006, Lipitz worked for Maryland Athletics in a senior management role involving internal and external operations. As Senior Associate Athletics Director for Administration, he supervised the Terps' marketing, licensing, ticketing and video units, as well as the wrestling and women's golf programs. Lipitz managed Maryland's relationship with its marketing rights holder, Terrapin Sports Marketing, and its football fundraising organization, the Maryland Gridiron Network. He also negotiated and managed Maryland's all-sport apparel deal with Under Armour, and the school's television and radio, multimedia and personnel contracts.

A native of Millville, New Jersey, Lipitz graduated from the University of Maryland with a degree in political science. He was a four-year starter and two-year co-captain on the men's tennis team and won the Geary F. Eppley Award as the graduating male student-athlete with the highest scholastic average. Lipitz then earned his law degree from Villanova University where he specialized in domestic relations.

He and his wife, Kerry, welcomed their son, Henry, in the fall of 2011. The couple resides in Cary, N.C.
