Tim Peeler became a contributor to www.GoPack.com in November, 2004, after nearly 20 years of covering college athletics for newspapers in the Carolinas. In August, 2006, he was named managing editor of GoPack.com, the official website of the NC State Athletics Department. His responsibilities include writing feature stories and game analyses about all NC State athletics and managing the content on GoPack.com. An archive of his columns is available here. He has also appeared on radio broadcasts produced by Wolfpack Sports Marketing.
His responsibilities also include serving as the NC State athletics department historian and archivist.
Before returning to NC State, Peeler was a staff writer at the Raleigh Times, Salisbury (NC) Post, The Greenville (SC) News and Greenville Piedmont, the Durham Herald-Sun and the Greensboro News & Record, covering college athletics, as well as golf, NBA basketball and high school sports. In 1996, he covered the Centennial Olympic Games in Atlanta and has reported on six Final Fours, seven Masters and two U.S. Opens.
During his newspaper career, Peeler won 10 national and regional writing awards from the North Carolina Press Association, the South Carolina Press Association, the Football Writers of America Association and the Associated Press Sports Editors. While working at the Greensboro News & Record, he won two first-place awards in the 2003 NCPA writing contest, one for a feature on former NC State cornerback J.J. Washington and an shared award for coverage of ACC expansion. He twice won the Landmark Award as the top reporter on the News & Record sports staff.
He has contributed to various newspapers and magazines over the last two decades, including Sports Illustrated, The Sporting News, the Associated Press, United Press International, USA Today and the Miami Herald. He is also a contributing editor to the Blue Ribbon College Football and College Basketball Yearbooks, a contributing editor to the NC State Alumni Magazine and a regular contributor to "The Wolfpacker," an independent magazine covering Wolfpack athletics.
Peeler has written three books about NC State basketball, "Legends of NC State Basketball" (Sports Publishing LLC, 2004), "When March Went Mad: A Celebration of NC State's 1983 National Championship" (Sports Publishing LLC, 2007) and "NC State Basketball: 100 Years of Innovation" (UNC Press, 2010) with Roger Winstead. A native of Vale, N.C., Peeler graduated from NC State in 1987 with a bachelor of arts in Writing and Editing, with a concentration in Communications. During his four-and-a-half years as a student at NC State, Peeler was sports editor of both Technician, the student newspaper, and Agromeck, the student yearbook, and a contributor to student radio station WKNC.
Peeler is a member of the Football Writers Association of America, the United States Basketball Writers Association, Co-Sida and the National Football Foundation.
An ordained Presybterian elder (May, 2011), Peeler serves on the Board of Directors for the NC State Presbyterian Campus Ministries (with former NC State football Academic All-America Justus Everett) and is active in various community and volunteer organizations, including Habitat for Humanity, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and the YMCA Y-Guides and Princesses.
Peeler lives in Cary with his wife, Elizabeth, and sons, Michael and Benjamin.
