RALEIGH, N.C. - NC State head women's basketball coach Kay Yow has announced that Trena Trice-Hill has joined the Wolfpack coaching staff and will serve as an assistant coach. Trice-Hill, a former Wolfpack standout, returns to NC State after serving two years as an assistant coach with Hampton University.
"It's special to reap the fruit of something you have helped to cultivate," said Yow. "Part of Trena's growth occurred at NC State and now she returns to help other grow."
Trice-Hill became one of NC State's first WNBA players in 1997, the league's inaugural year, and played with the New York Liberty for two seasons. Additionally, she played with the Federal International Basketball Association (FIBA) for 12 years prior to becoming an assistant coach with Hampton University in 2002.
"It's a great feeling to return to the Wolfpack," said Trice-Hill. "I am very excited to have this opportunity. I have many goals in mind, one of which is to get this program another ACC title. There is a lot of work to be done to get there, but I am very determined and very eager to get things started."
During her two years at Hampton, she helped guide the Pirates two back-to-back MEAC Championship titles and NCAA Tournament berths.
As a player at NC State from 1983-87, Trice-Hill averaged 15.1 ppg and 8.4 rpg, including a double-double as a senior (18.3 ppg, 10.4 rpg), to become the Wolfpack's sixth all-time leading scorer with 1,761 points and fourth all-time leading rebounder with 984 boards. During her four years she guided the Pack to four-straight NCAA appearances, two Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament titles (1985 and 1987) and an ACC Season Championship in 1985. She was named All-ACC all four years, including two first team honors, one second team and was a member of the All-Freshman team. In addition, she was a two-time ACC All-Tournament selection. Trice-Hill was a Wade Trophy Finalist in 1986 and went on to participate in the 1988 Olympic Trials. The 6-3 former center is just one of seven players to have her No. 15 jersey retired to the rafters of historic Reynolds Coliseum and was named to the ACC's 50th Anniversary team in 2002.
Trice-Hill is a native of Norfolk, Va., and graduated with a degree in Speech Communications from NC State. She is married to Derrick A. Hill, and has a daughter, Kiana (10).
Coach Yow begins her 30th year as a head coach with NC State with the 2004-05 season. She along with 11-year Associate Head Coach Stephanie Glance, will be assisted by two former Wolfpack standouts in Trice-Hill and Jenny Palmateer, now in her sixth year.
