The regional race features nine ranked teams
RALEIGH, N.C. – The NC State cross country program heads to Earlysville, Va., for the NCAA Southeast Regional Friday. Both top-10 teams will look to earn a top-two finish, which guarantees an automatic qualifying bid to the NCAA Championships.
The Southeast Region:
Five ranked men's teams and four ranked women's teams highlight the field. NC State leads the men's rankings at 10th, while No. 12 Virginia, No. 13 Furman, No. 18 Virginia Tech and No. 26 Eastern Kentucky also hold USTFCCCA rankings.
During the regular season, NC State finished just behind Virginia and Furman at the Wisconsin Invite. Virginia finished fourth, while Furman edged the Red and White by one point. At ACC Championships, the Pack finished 20 points ahead of the third-place Cavaliers.
On the women's side, host Virginia leads the rankings at sixth, while No. 8 NC State, No. 22 William and Mary and No. 28 North Carolina round out the ranked teams.
The women have also raced frequently against its regional rivals. Virginia edged NC State twice during the season so far, finishing third at Wisconsin and first at the conference championships – one spot ahead of the Pack in both races. However, NC State has gained ground on the Cavaliers as the season has progressed, cutting the margin from 23 points to just four points between the two races.
Fan Information:
The men's race is set for noon, and the women will follow at 1 p.m. Admission to the race is free, but parking is five dollars per vehicle.
NCAA Cross Country Format:
Each year, 31 teams advance to the NCAA Championships. The top two teams from USTFCCCA's nine regions advance automatically. The remaining 13 spots are filled by at-large bids. Teams receive at large bids based on performance throughout the season.
