RALEIGH, N.C. - After an impressive 3-0 performance this past weekend at the Northeast Duals, including a 31-3 defeat of No. 16 Minnesota, the NC State wrestling team continues to climb in the national rankings which were released on Tuesday.
As a team the Wolfpack moved up to No. 5 in this week's FloWrestling rankings, the Pack started the season at No. 9. In addition, two NC State wrestlers sit atop the rankings at their respective weight classes - Kevin Jack at 141 pounds and Nick Gwiazdowski at 285.
"This is something we all believe in, guys are really buying in," said head coach Pat Popolizio. "Everybody in the practice room wants to be one of the best in the country, that is a mentality that everybody shares. We are all on the same page, and the common goal is to bring home some trophies.
"For Kevin and Nick, those rankings are a reflection of the success and hard work that they have put into it. They must continue to improve, as must our entire squad, but their rankings help give our team momentum and puts everybody in a good position on the national stage."
NC State is one of just two schools (Ohio State) with a pair of wrestlers ranked #1 at their weight classes this week by FloWrestling. Overall, five Pack grapplers continue to be ranked.
In the week's InterMat poll, six Pack wrestlers are among the top-20. Redshirt freshman Sean Fausz makes his first appearance in the rankings, as his 3-0 record this past weekend and defeat of the 19th ranked wrestler, has him at #19 at 125 pounds.
The new rankings continuing a huge week for the Wolfpack, which on Monday announced a 10-man signing class. Six of the Pack's signees have been ranked as a top-100 recruit, regardless of weight class, and seven are currently ranked in the top-20 in their weight classes - three in the top-10 - as their senior seasons get underway.
The Wolfpack will be in home action this weekend. On Saturday, the Wolfpack will host four dual matches in the Wolfpack Duals at Cary Academy High School and on Sunday host the Wolfpack Open in Carmichael Gymnasium.
