LOUISVILLE, Ken. – The NC State women's cross country team made its #STATEment on Saturday at Tom Sawyer State Park, finishing fifth at the NCAA Championships with 264 points. The finish is the highest since the team was the national runner up in 2001. Each of the Pack's scorers finished with fewer than 75 points in the true team effort.
The men continued its upward trend, finishing 28th with 596 points. The team missed the championships in 2014. The squad gains a full year of NCAA experience, racing back-to-back 10,000m races.
Women's Race
The women's fifth-place finish was a team effort in every sense, as no individual had a breakout performance, but the entire team ran well. The group had no All-Americans, but the top five finished within 37 scorers of each other.
All seven runners that lined up for the Pack had big performances. Erika Kemp led the way, completing the course in 20:33.9 for 57th place and 38 points. Rachel Koon capped off her breakout year as the team's second runner, crossing the finish line in 20:36.6 for 59th place with 40 points.
Samantha George returned to the team's top five standings, finishing as the team's third runner in 71st place with 49 points. George moved up 13 places over the course's final 4,000m.
Megan Moye had one of team's most heroic performances of the day, as she completed the course with only one shoe. Moye lost her shoe about 30 seconds into the race, but pressed on to finish fourth on the team and 94th overall. The Moseley, Va., native crossed the finish line in 20:48.9, running over 20 minutes of the race with only one shoe.
True freshman Ryen Frazier capped off her remarkable first season with the Pack as the team's fifth scorer. Frazier crossed the finish line in 20:53.8 in 107th place.
Kaitlyn Kramer and Alyssa Rudawsky finished as the teams sixth and seventh place runners, respectively. Kramer finished just behind Frazier for 130th place, while Rudawsky completed her first NCAA Championship race in 21:16.4 for 163rd.
Kramer played a critical role in the Pack's fifth-place finish, as she finished ahead of Michigan's sixth runner to give NC State the edge.
The women improved 11 spots from their 16th-place finish at NCAAs in 2014, and return all but one runner in today's line up.
Men's Race
The NC State men finished 28th overall with 569 points. The team lined up without several of its key athletes. Sam Parsons led the way with 49 points. Bakri Abushouk had a huge race, and moved past several contestants down the home stretch to finish with 55 points. Abushouk was competing in his first-ever NCAA Championships.
Tanis Baldwin also made his NCAA Championships debut, finishing as the Pack's fourth runner with 192 points.
The Pack continues its upward trend. After only qualifying an individual in 2014 and finishing 28th in 2015, the team returns four of the team's five scorers and five of its seven that lined up today. A large portion of next year's team will now have a year of experience in racing back-to-back 10,000m races.
Up Next:
The majority of the team will shift its focus to indoor track season, while a few individuals may race at the USA XC Championships in Boulder, Colo., in February.
