Cary, N.C. – For the second consecutive year, the NC State cross country teams swept the adidas XC Challenge. The men took first with 22 points, and the women took the top spot with 19 points.
Freshman Ryen Frazier crushed the course record on her college debut, crossing the finish line in 16:06.4, 22 seconds lower than the previous record set in 2013. On the men's side Elon-transfer Luis Vargas won the meet for the second year in a row, crossing the finish line in 14:38.4 as an unattached runner.
Running with the Pack:
Both the men and women's teams finished at the top in bunches. The top-five scorers for the men crossed the finish line within 30 seconds of each other.
Bakri Abushouk led the way, coming in fourth overall with a time of 14:58.4. Sebastian Hanson, Sam Roberson and Zack Langston all picked up top-10 finishes, while redshirt senior Vibushan Sivakumaran rounded out the scoring in 12th place for the Wolfpack.
Nick Link also had a strong race, finishing as NC State's sixth man at 13th overall with a time of 15:30.3.
On the women's side, The Pack's second through fifth scorers all crossed the finish line within 18 seconds of each other.
Ryen Frazier powered her way to the front of the race. Closely behind her, scorers Rachel Koon and Megan Moye finished top-five, while Kaitlyn Kramer and Bianca Bishop finished in the top-10.
Olivia Enright and Alyssa Rudawsky also had strong finishes, checking at the Wolfpack's sixth and seventh place runners, respectively. Enright finished the race 12th, while Rudawsky followed closely behind for 14th.
Team Scores:
The women's team score was 29 points clear of their nearest competition. The men's race was slightly closer as the Pack edged their closet opponent by 16 points.
Pack Debuts:
Along with the team finishes, several Wolfpackers logged impressive finishes in their first action of the year while running unattached.
Vargas led the race, finishing 10 seconds faster than his closest competition. Freshman Tanis Baldwin finished second with a time of 14:48.7, while Philip Hall (15:02.3) and Aaron Thomas (15:09.2) crossed the finish line sixth and eighth, respectively. Ben Barrett (15:25.0) and Kyle Christ (15:47.1) also had top-20 performances.
On the women's side, Wesley Frazier finished second overall with a time of 16:28.5. Sarah Kanney was the Pack's first unattached freshman to finishing the race, clocking in at 17:19.6 for seventh overall.
