@PackWrestle Wins Eight Bouts and Dominates #17 Virginia 35-7 in ACC Win

RALEIGH, N.C. - The No. 3 NC State wrestling team won eight bouts, including six straight, and dominated #17 Virginia in a 35-7 ACC win on Sunday. The Wolfpack (17-0) won the first two bouts and started with a 8-0 lead, then after a UVA (5-3) win, the Pack won six straight to secure the home dual win.
The win improves the Pack to a perfect 17-0 this season, including 4-0 versus ranked foes. The 17 wins are already the third-most in school history, and are a career-best for head coach Pat Popolizio at NC State.
Two-time defending NCAA Champion #1 Nick Gwiazdowski dominated the opening bout, getting two four-point near falls and a two-point near fall to start the Pack with an 18-3 technical win. Gwizdowski improves to 20-0 on the season, and extends his NCAA-best winning streak to 75 matches.
Redshirt-freshman Sean Fausz then scored three first-period takedowns and jumped out to a 6-2 lead after the first period at 125 pounds, and finished off his win by riding Virginia the entire third period and scoring an 8-4 win, his first ACC dual win of his career.
After a technical fall for UVA at 133, the Pack responded with six straight wins - four for bonus points. The Cavs got five team points with the win at 133, but were later deducted a team point for unsportsmanlike conduct after the 141 pound bout.
#3 Kevin Jack started the Pack's winning streak with a dominating 10-0 major decision at 141 pounds, which included 4:48 of ride time and a four-point near fall.
Beau Donahue followed up at 149 with a 9-6 win. Tied at 4-4 going into the final period, Donahue scored a quick escape then got taken down, but rolled right into a reversal and got a lead he would hold on to until the end, 9-6.
In the most exciting bout of the day, #8 Tommy Gantt scored a takedown with just three seconds left and scored an 11-9 come-from-behind win at 157 pounds. After the first two periods saw just one takedown and two stall points, the third period was action packed with six takedowns and Gantt the aggressor the entire period.
The Pack then cemented the victory with three straight bonus points wins. #8 Max Rohsskopf (165) and #15 Pete Renda (184) both scored first-period pins, and Nicky Hall scored a 17-2 technical fall win at 174 pounds. UVA closed with its second win at 197 to make the final 35-7.
The win was the biggest against Virginia since a 31-3 home win in 1996, and the 35 points scored against the Cavs were the most in a dual since a 40-3 home win in 1992.
