NC State baseball drops Opening Day tilt against Old Dominion

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - No. 10 NC State baseball dropped its season opener 5-0 against Old Dominion on Friday at TicketReturn.com Field.
The Wolfpack (0-1) fell behind 2-0 in the first on a pair of walks and a two-RBI single. In the third, sixth, and seventh, ODU (1-0) added single runs to extend the advantage.
Stephen Pitarra started at second and contributed the first two hits of his collegiate career, a pair of singles. Preston Palmeiro added the Pack's only other hit, a single in the first.
NC State utilized seven arms on the day. Johnny Piedmonte (0-1) started and worked 2 2/3, allowing three runs, two earned on four walks and a strikeout. Austin Staley made his debut next, pitching 1 1/3 of no-hit ball. Cory Wilder went the next two with two strikeouts.Â
Travis Orwig struck out the side in the seventh. Chris Williams retired one batter in three faced. Cody Beckman fanned one in 2/3. Kyle Smith finished the game, striking out a pair over a perfect ninth in his first college appearance.
