NC State baseball clinched the series with a come-from-behind, walk-off win
RALEIGH, N.C. - No. 13 NC State baseball walked off with a 3-2 victory over Wake Forest in the 10th inning on Saturday at Doak Field at Dail Park.
The Wolfpack (22-9, 7-5 ACC) won its fourth game in a row, and sixth of its last seven. Wake Forest (19-14, 5-9) scored one in the fifth, and made it 2-0 heading into the seventh-inning stretch. NC State rallied with Ryne Willard's RBI in the seventh, Joe Dunand's in the eighth, and Preston Palmeiro's walk-off single in the 10th to set the final 3-2.
Saturday marks the first NC State walk-off since Palmeiro pulled the feat against Miami in the 2015 ACC Tournament. The junior finished his evening 2-for-5 with a double, the game-winning RBI, and the game-tying run.
Josh McLain and Joe Dunand contributed three hits each. McLain doubled twice, stole his eighth base of the year, and scored the game-winning run. Dunand scored the Pack's first run and drove in Palmeiro to tie it. Willard, Brett Kinneman, Evan Mendoza, and Xavier LeGrant supplied one single each.
Wolfpack starter Brian Brown left with a no-decision after six innings of remarkable work, fanning five and scattering four hits with one unearned run allowed. Sean Adler, Chris Williams, and Travis Orwig faced the next seven batters.
Will Gilbert (3-0) took it from there, claiming the win on 2 2/3 with two baserunners allowed, reaching on a walk and infield single. Gilbert punched out four while escaping jams in the eighth, ninth, and 10th.
NC State returns to action Monday night at 7 PM on ESPNU for the series finale. Radio coverage will be provided by 88.1 WKNC. Fans can follow along with live stats on GoPack.com, or Twitter updates via @NCStateBaseball.
