No. 37 NC State Splits Doubleheader, Defeats No. 70 Winthrop

RALEIGH – The No. 37 NC State women's tennis team split its Saturday doubleheader with No. 7 Miami and No. 70 Winthrop. The Wolfpack fell to Miami, 5-0, in the first-match of the day, then defeated Winthrop, 6-1. The Wolfpack improves to 12-9 (4-7 ACC). Miami improves to 15-4 (9-2 ACC), while Winthrop falls to 17-4 (8-1 BSC).

NC State went toe-to-toe with Miami in doubles play and had several strong singles matches against the top-10 foe, but fell short, as Miami won several crucial points down the stretch.
The Pack jumped out to an advantage in doubles play, as Amanda Rebol and Claudia Wiktorin picked up a dominant 6-1 win from the No. 3 doubles spot. The duo won the first five games before splitting the final two games in the match.
Miami leveled the score with a narrow 6-4 victory from the top spot, as the No. 9 duo of Wendy Zhang and Stephanie Wagner held off a late rally from Martina Frantova and Tayla Stenta.
At No. 2 doubles, Joanna Nalborska and Bianca Moldovann held the lead for most of the match but dropped several heart-breaking points near the end. Miami's duo of Sinead Lohan and Clara Tanielian stormed back late in the set to force match point. The duo then came back again after falling behind 4-2 in the tiebreaker to win, 7-6 (7-5).
In singles play, Miami took three of the opening four sets. Joanna Nalborska added the lone first-set win, responding nicely from her doubles match with a 6-1 win over No. 7 Sinead Lohan.
No. 38 Frantova jumped out to an early lead against No. 5 Stephanie Wagner, but fell, 6-4, while Amanda Rebol's late rally came up short and Miami's Silvia Fuentes took the first set, 7-5.
In the second set, Nalborska's lead was erased, as Miami's Lohan won 6-1 and sent the match to a deciding third set. Frantova won in the tiebreaker to go to a third set while Moldovan's comeback came just short, and Miami earned its second match point of the game. On court four, Rebol fell in straight sets and Miami took a 3-0 lead.
The Hurricanes clinched the match with a three-set victory at No. 2 singles as No. 7 Lohan earned a 1-6, 6-1, 6-4 win over Nalborska.
Fratnova fell 10-7 in the third-set tiebreak and Miami earned its fifth point. The two remaining matches were suspended.

Winthrop Match Recap:
The Pack rebounded nicely with a dominant showing against Winthrop. The team responded well after losing the doubles point to sweep all six singles points from the Golden Eagles.
Frantova and Stenta earned a big win at the top of the doubles lineup, defeating Lauren Proctor and Mariana Humberg, 6-1. Winthrop evened the score with a 6-4 win at the No. 3 doubles spot then added a narrow 7-6(4) win on court two to claim the doubles point.
In singles play, No. 38 Frantova leveled the match with a 7-5, 6-1 victory from the top spot. The win gives Frantova 11 spring-season wins and 27 total wins this year.
On court two, Nalborska defeated No. 124 Alice Garcia in straight sets, earning a 6-4, 6-4 victory from No. 2 singles. The win gives her 10 spring-season victories and 17 on the entire season.
Once the upperclassmen earned the lead, the freshmen would extend it and clinch the overall victory.
On court four, Moldovan held off a late rally from Winthrop's Humberg to win 6-3, 7-6(1). She won the first set comfortably and stretched out to a 5-3 lead in the second before Humberg came back to tie the match at 5. In the tiebreak, Moldovan regained her form and won convincingly, 7-1, to end the rally and give the Pack a 3-1 lead. It was her ninth victory this spring and the 12th of her career.
On court three, Rebol added the clinching point with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 win over Caitlin Critland. The win gives Rebol a team-high 13 victories this spring.
Moments after Rebol won the fourth point, Wiktorin extended NC State's lead to 5-1 with a dominating, 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 5 singles.
In a marathon final match, Stenta got back on track with a three-set win (7-6(6), 1-6, 1-0(6)). The win ends Stenta's six-match skid and marks the third time this season that the Wolfpack has swept all six singles courts.

The team has another important weekend ahead with a visit to Duke on Tuesday and senior day against Wake Forest on Friday.
