
Former Pack Gymnast Maggie Haney Coaches Pupil To Gold Medal

Laurie Hernandez helps USA win gold in team all-around
RIO DE JANEIRO- The United States gymnastics team dominated the field this past week at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, earning its second-straight gold medal in the team all-around competition on Tuesday by a commanding 8.2 points over runner-up Russia.

The members of the five-person squad comprised of 2012 Olympians Aly Raisman and Gabby Douglas, as well as first-time members Simone Biles, Laurie Hernandez and Madison Kocian.

Hernandez, a New Brunswick, N.J., native, qualified to represent her native country on the biggest stage of athletics with the guidance of former NC State gymnast Maggie Haney.

Haney was a standout gymnast with the Wolfpack, as she is one of three from the program's all-time roster to earn a perfect score of 10.0, and the only athlete in program history to post a perfect score on two events.

A member of the program from 1997-2000, she helped the team to four NCAA Regional appearances, and was additionally a part of the Pack's only squad to advance to an NCAA Championship.

Hernandez competed for Team USA on vault, balance beam and floor exercise in the qualification round, helping the squad to enter the team final as the top seed. In the team final, she took part in the three rotations again to help the United States earn a total of 184.897.
