Freshman Manny Perez provides two assists in win over Seahawks
October 17, 2017
RALEIGH – The NC State men's soccer team (7-4-3) is now unbeaten in five consecutive matches after picking up a 2-1 victory over a strong UNCW team Tuesday evening at Dail Soccer Stadium.
Ade Taiwo scored the match-winning goal in the 86th minute from a Manny Perez assist. Perez provided assists on both Wolfpack goals, also feeding teammate Clayton Sparks for the opening strike in the 18th minute.
UNCW (9-5-0) was ranked No. 15 in the nation as recently as Oct. 10 before falling out of the top 25 on Tuesday afternoon. The Seahawks entered the match owning an RPI rank of 44th.
Sparks opened the scoring Tuesday evening with his second goal of the season in the 18th minute. Freshman David Norris played a long ball over the top of the defense to Perez. The freshman collected the pass, made multiple moves past a defender, and played a perfect low ball across the six-yard box to Sparks, who tapped it in before goalkeeper Ryan Cretens had a chance to react.
Freshman goalkeeper Leon Krapf was tested for the first time in the 29th minute when Mark Lindstrom struck a volley first time on target from very close range. Krapf coolly made the save, the first of his three on the night.
After a sustained spell of pressure, UNCW pulled level in the 81st minute when Kalvin Kromer scored a sensational goal from 22 yards away. Receiving passes from Ben Fisher and Julio Moncada, he bent a long shot just inside the far post to snap NC State's streak of holding teams scoreless at 338 minutes.
Taiwo re-entered the match immediately following the goal and scored the winner just five minutes later, beating the goalkeeper low following an impressive run and assist from Perez.
NC State returns to action on Saturday at No. 5/9 Louisville. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. with live video coverage provided by ACC Network Extra.
