ST. LOUIS, MO. – The opening round of the 2017 NCAA Championships saw NC State advance four wrestlers to tonight's second round, while the remaining six will be on the consolation bracket tonight. The Pack started with a pin at 125 pounds then a major decision win at 141. An OT win at 184 pounds was followed by an upset victory at 285 to close the opening session.

Action resumes tonight at 7 p.m. (ET) from St. Louis. The evening session starts with the consolation pig tails followed by the second round, those that won earlier, and then followed by the consolation matches.

R-So. Sean Fausz started the Pack's day with a pin in the first bout for NC State. The #12 seed at 125 pounds, Fausz started fast with a takedown just 12 seconds into the bout, and was up 4-1 after the first when he added a late second takedown. Fausz started the second period down, but scored a reversal, and turned it into a pin 3:19 into his match.

Jr. Kevin Jack got the Pack's second win, and also the second bonus point victory. The #2 seed at 141 pounds, Jack grinded out a 10-0 major decision over Lock Haven's Ronnie Perry. Jack scored a takedown in the second and third periods, and forced multiple stall call points to advance to the second round.

R-Jr. Michael Macchiavello had to go to overtime, but advanced with a win in his first NCAA bout. The #10 seed at 184 pounds, Macchiavello started with a first period takedown of Campbell's Ville Heino. They two exchanged escapes, and Heino was awarded a penalty point and the escape in the third to send it into OT. Just 12 seconds in, Macchiavello scored the winning takedown for the win.

In the Pack's final bout of the first round, R-Sr. Mike Kosoy scored the upset win in his NCAA debut as he took out #13 seed Collin Jensen of Nebraska 5-2. Avenging an earlier season loss to Jensen, Kosoy scored the matches' lone takedowns in both the first and second periods to pick up the win.
