
Wolfpack Athletes Shine on Opening Day of Raleigh Relays

RALEIGH, N.C. – The NC State track and field team capped off an impressive first day at the 2017 Raleigh Relays. The Wolfpack's distance runners stole the show late, setting times at the top of the national standings with impressive 1,500m 5,000m and 10,000m races. Additionally, numerous athletes made season debuts and set strong marks to open the season.

Distance:
Erika Kemp headlined the group with a 10,000m victory. Kemp, running in her first 10,000m in two years, sat on the shoulder of the race's leaders before kicking her way to victory with 300m to go. Kemp crossed the line with an NCAA-leading time of 33:36.26.

Wolfpack freshmen Elly Henes and Ryen Frazier added top-three national times in the 5,000m. The duo ran with the front pack the entirety of their race. Henes crossed the line in third for the NCAA's second-fastest time this season of 16:01.73. Frazier finished fourth for the NCAA's third fastest time this season of 16:02.39.

Alyssa Rudawsky added the nation's 8th fastest 5,000m time this season, crossing the finish line in 12th with a time 16:28.84.

Eli Moskowitz led the men's distance runners in the 10,000m, taking 16th overall with a time of 29:24.45 for the nation's 14th fastest 10,000m time. The race marked his 10,000m track debut.

In the men's 5,000m race, Ben Barrett crossed the finish line in 14:22.70 for 25th place and the NCAA's  20th fastest time. Patrick Sheehan finished 32nd, crossing the finish line in 14:26.43.

Aaron Thomas ran to the nation's 17th fastest 3,000m steeplechase time, breaking his PR with a time of 9:13.09. The mark was good for sixth place and booked his spot in the ACC Outdoor Championships.

In the women's event, Rachel Bartolomeo added an 18th-place finish with a time of 10:54.07 in her 3,000m steeplechase season debut.

Mid-Distance:
Sam Parsons kicked his way to the NCAA's No. 3 time this season and the 10th-best time in school history in the 1,500m. Parsons was near the middle of the pack on the final turn but closed the distance well, jumping to third with a time of 3:44.52.

Throws:
Alyssa Dunn led the way in the women's shot put, capturing a sixth-place finish with a throw of 48'5.50". Lauren Evans took eight with a throw of 47'10.75".

The Pack's freshmen also had success competing as unattached athletes. Tyson Fortenberry took third in the men's discus with a throw of 169'4.00" and Alex Williams added an 10th place finish in the men's shot put with a throw of 49'6.25".

Jumps:
Christopher Garrick improved on his season best, clearing 6'10.75" to take third place in the high jump. NC State alumnus Kris Kornegay-Gober returned the facility to win the event, clearing the bar at 6'11.75". JaTory "JT" Reid jumped a season best 6'6.75" to win the open event.

In the triple jump, all five NC State women finished in the top-20. Javonne Antoine led the way with a leap of 18'9.25" to take fifth overall. Nicole Teague jumped to the best mark of her collegiate career, finishing ninth with a leap of 18'1.50". Lauren White finished closely behind in 11th place with a mark of 18'1.00". Imari McLean and Amara Bell finished 16th and 17th respectively after each jumped 17'8.25".

Hurdles/Sprints:
NC State alumna Alexis Perry opened action on the track, running unattached in the 100m hurdles. Perry rolled to an event win, crossing the finish line in 13.61. Lauren White led the way in the 100m dash, taking 15th with a time of 12.11.

Junpai Dowdy led the men's team in the 400m, taking eighth overall in 48.26 to lock up an ACC qualifying mark. Abdur Rahmaan Kelly followed right behind, finishing 13th in 48.99

On the women's side, Tiana Patillo added a quick 400m, crossing the finish line 55.64 for seventh place in the women's race.Â

NC State will be back in action tomorrow to conclude the Raleigh Relays. The meet will begin at 10 a.m. with the men's javelin.
