CLEMSON, S.C. – Behind a career-high four runs batted in by Noah Soles and a strong showing from the Wolfpack's bullpen, No. 22 NC State baseball (17-9, 5-5 ACC) evened its series with Clemson (18-8, 2-5 ACC) on Saturday night at Doug Kingsmore Stadium with a 5-2 victory.
Soles was responsible for all five runs scored while the trio of Canaan Silver, Baker Nelson and Chris Villaman combined for six shutout innings and 10 strikeouts in relief for the Pack's sixth win in its last eight games.
The Tigers once again plated the first run of the game in the first inning thanks to Max Wagner's RBI double up the right field line after Cooper Ingle laced a one-out single to left field.
The Pack answered back with a pair of runs in the second, taking a 2-1 lead. Dominic Pilolli roped a one-out double to right center and J.T. Jarrett drew a walk to bring up Soles, and a base hit by Soles followed by a Clemson error allowed the runners to score.
Clemson's Blake Wright knotted the score at 2-2 in the bottom frame with a solo shot to left field.
In the fourth, Soles tallied his second hit and second RBI of the game with a double down the right field line after Payton Green reached on a two-out double prior to his at bat.
The Tigers looked to knot the score back up in its half of the fourth, putting runners at first and second via back-to-back walks, but Silver entered in relief and retired three consecutive batters to strand them.
After Silver's second consecutive shutout inning on the mound, Soles extended the Pack's lead to 5-2 in the sixth thanks to his 2-RBI single with runners in scoring position, as Tommy White and Jarrett started the threat with an outfield single and double, respectively.
Soles went 3-for-3 on the day to mark his second-straight multi-hit outing, as he now has five hits and five RBIs in the series.
With a runner at first and two outs in the seventh, Nelson relieved Silver and recorded the final out to keep the Tigers off the board. Villaman proceeded to toss the final two innings and allow just one batter to reach base.
Silver fanned a career-high five batters in three innings of work to improve to 3-0 on the mound this year, while Villaman tallied five strikeouts en route to his fourth save in as many appearances and fifth of the season.
NC State and Clemson will meet Sunday in a rubber game to decide the series. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at Doug Kingsmore Stadium, and the game will be broadcast on ACCNX with an audio stream on WKNC 88.1.
