LOUISVILLE – The Wolfpack softball team (11-20, 4-8) recorded its third extra inning game in the loss to Louisville (22-9, 7-2) in the series finale.
The two teams tied in the seventh inning and the Cardinals managed to score in the bottom of the ninth to take the win.
The Cardinals opened the afternoon with a triple to center field and the runner later scored to give them the early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Freshman pitcher Madison Inscoe struck out back-to-back batters to end the first and pick up her first strikeouts of the afternoon.
To open the second inning, Katlyn Pavlick singled to center field and then stole second while Hannah Goodwin was at the plate. Goodwin singled to left field, allowing Pavlick to reach third. She later advanced to second and then third after errors on the Cardinals infield, while Pavlick scored to tie the game one all.
Both teams remained scoreless through the fifth inning and the Pack brought in a pitching change in the bottom half of the fifth. Freshman Rylee Wyman entered a tie game and helped record a three up, three down inning.
Inscoe finished the afternoon with five strikeouts in four innings pitched.
The top of the sixth brought Amanda Hasler's 10th hit by pitch this season and she now holds the program record for most by a freshman. The Pack was unable to get someone into scoring position as the Cardinals got the next two batters out.
The Wolfpack picked up two huge outs in the bottom of the sixth after the Cardinals loaded the bases. Louisville scored one after a sacrifice fly brought the runner at third home and allowed them to take the lead 2-1.
The top of the seventh started with Libby Whittaker taking the box first. She singled up the middle and freshman Nadia Sykes entered to pinch run. Kaylee Lambrecht worked a 2-2 count before hitting a single to right field, allowing Sykes to advance to third. Taylor Ensley entered as a pinch hitter in the nine spot with runners on the corners. She hit a sacrifice fly to center field, but Sykes scored to tie the game two all. Rebecca Murray entered the box with two outs and one on base but recorded a flyout to right field.
Redshirt-junior Aisha Weixlmann entered the circle in the bottom of the seventh. She caught the first out after a line drive from Korbe Otis went right back into her glove. The Pack then grabbed the next two outs to end the seventh and send the game into extra innings.
MaKayla Marbury was the first to take the box to open the eighth inning. She singled up the middle and Hasler stepped into the box next. She hit it toward the Cardinals shortstop who tagged second and then threw to first to get the double play. Pavlick then reached first on an error by the Cardinals third base and Goodwin grounded out to the pitcher to end the top of the eighth.
In the bottom of the ninth, the Cardinals won after a double to left allowed one to score and win 3-2.
