Hoops 4 Hope: A Play 4Kay Breast Cancer Awareness Event at NC State
The 2013-14 season will mark the 9th year of Hoops 4Hope! This event is more than a basketball game, it is a chance to raise awareness on the court and in the community for a cause that has affected many. This event was near and dear to former NC State Women's Basketball Coach Kay Yow, who founded the Kay Yow Cancer Fund on December 3, 2007. Coach Yow was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 1987 before succumbing to the disease on January 24, 2009. Her mission and vision for the Fund was simple; be a part of finding an answer in the fight against women's cancers through raising money for scientific research, assisting the underserved and unifying people for a common cause.
Since the Fund's inception, $2.6 million has been granted for scientific research and related programs focused on women's cancers. The Kay Yow Cancer Fund has also worked closely with Rex Healthcare to fund The Coach, the only mobile mammography unit in Wake County.
"There are so many blessings that have come as a result of this battle." - Coach Kay Yow.
This is a day of celebration! Coach Yow wanted this event to focus on survivors and their loved ones... Reach out to the survivors in your family and encourage them to join the half-time celebration.
Hoops 4Hope is also a fundraising event for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. Since 2008, NC State has raised more than $160,000 to support breast cancer research and related projects.
