The number of All-Americans that NC State cross country has produced over the years could make it seem like an easy accomplishment. That notion couldn't be further from the truth.

The Wolfpack coaching staff recruits excellent student-athletes and prepares them as well as possible to perform at the highest levels of intercollegiate competition.

NC State women's cross country found quick success early in the program's history when Joan Benoit and Julie Shea became the first two cross country athletes at NC State to earn All-America honors.

Shea went on to earn that distinction four times. Shea, along with Betty Springs, were the only four-time All-Americans in any sport in the history of NC State athletics. Connie Jo Robinson, Janet Smith and Suzie Tuffey were honored as All-Americans three times apiece.

Not to be out done, the men's program has also produced a significant number of All-Americans. In 1980, Steve Francis became NC State's first male runner to receive All-America honors, after he was invited to run at the NCAA Championships as an individual. Andrew Colley, Bob Henes, Ryan Hill and Chan Pons all were three-time All-Americans, and Chris Dugan, Chad Pearson and Brendan Rodgers all were two-time All-Americans.
