Cheerleaders Shine at National Championships
The NC State cheerleading and mascot program recently traveled down to Daytona Beach, Fla., to compete in the 2011 NCA Collegiate National Championships. NC State's large coed squad placed fourth nationally, while the small coed team finished third.
Mr. and Ms. Wuf both qualified to participate in the mascot championships as well, as they placed 8th and 12th respectfully. NC State was the only university to have two mascots represented.
Small coed: Last year's team, in the first year of the program, came short of making finals. This year, the team placed second after the preliminary competition and ended the season in third place nationally. The competition team consists of 20 athletes, 16 female and four male athletes that compete.
Large coed: This year's team placed fifth after the preliminary competition and ended the season fourth nationally. This year, eight teams qualified by video or competed at the NCA College Summer camps held around the country. NC State's large coed qualified at camp and received a Best All-Around Gold paid bid to attend Nationals. With this being one of the highest honors at camp, the team received the highest score in the IA coed division in the Game Day competition to compete against all divisions and won the title. Large coeds competition team is made up of 20 athletes, nine female and 11 male.
The cheerleading squads have also had tremendous success in the classroom. The program had 41 scholar athletes and three of the top 10 scholar athletes. In fact, the cheerleading and mascot program had five of the top 15 scholar athletes at NC State.
