RALEIGH, N.C. - The NC State rifle team opened the 2014 portion of its schedule with a strong showing at Murray State on Saturday inside the Pat Spurgin Rifle Range. The Wolfpack fired its second-highest score of the season with a combined score of 4612 to finish second.

Murray State won the event with a score of 4632, while Columbus State ended third with a 4525.

"Our 4612 is the second highest score for us this year, so it's a good start for the semester," said head coach Keith Miller. "No personal records, just solid scores up and down the line. That's a pretty good place to be at this point in the semester, so we're overall pretty pleased with the match."

Freshman Lucas Kozeniesky led the Pack in the air rifle competition with a score of 586 to finish with the second-best score at the match. Sophomore Daniel Cliff fired the fourth-best score with a 585, while senior Madeline Pike shot a 582. Senior Amy Roderer tallied a 579 and sophomore Alex Martin rounded out the lineup for State with a score of 577. The Wolfpack finished the event with a team score of 2332.

In smallbore, Pike paced the field of 22 shooters as she registered the top score in the event with a score of 578. Kozeniesky shot a 568 and Cliff finished closely behind with a 567. Martin and Roderer tallied scores of 567 and 565, respectively. State combined to record a score of 2280 in the event.

The Wolfpack will return to action on Sunday, Jan. 19, when it travels to West Virginia.
