CHARLESTON, S.C. - The No. 20 NC State rifle team turned in a strong performance at the SEARC 5 on Saturday. The team took first place, defeating all five conference foes, and all six NCAA competitors in the match. The Wolfpack combined to shoot an overall score of 4556 (2304 air rifle and 2252 smallbore). The air rifle score was the second-highest for NC State this fall.
"As a team, we reached our goals for this match," said head coach Keith Miller. "We had solid scores for our counters, remained undefeated in SEARC matches, and got in some excellent practice on the same range where we'll face Ole Miss and Air Force next weekend."
NC State took the first three spots in air rifle, and the top four places in smallbore. In air rifle, Dani Foster placed first (583), followed by Madeline Pike (581) in second and Bryan Cross in third (574). Martha Hall also turned in a top-10 performance with her ninth place finish (566).
Cross took first place in smallbore with his score of 569, followed by Foster in second (565). Pike finished third (562) and Hall took fourth (556).
The team turned in two personal-best performances at the match. Pike's air rifle score was good for her best mark, as was Foster's combined score of 1148. Hall's total score of 1122 was just one point shy of her personal-best as well.
"It was a solid overall team performance," said Miller. "Dani led with her 1148 total, and Maddy and Bryan added good totals at 1143 each. Maddy has been very consistent lately and is starting to raise her performance a few points each match."
NC State will return to action on Saturday in Charleston, S.C., against No. 14 Air Force, No. 6 Ole Miss, and The Citadel. Air Force and Ole Miss are members of the Great American Rifle Conference, while The Citadel is part of the SEARC. NC State is a member of both conferences.
"Hopefully we'll have our full team available and healthy by the weekend and build on our steady improvement," said Miller. "With Saturday being our GARC conference match against Ole Miss and a chance to do well against Air Force, we are very motivated."
