CHARLESTON, S.C. - The NC State rifle team finished first at The Citadel Invitational with a score of 4597, Sunday afternoon at the Inuoye Markmanship Center. The Wolfpack reached the 20-win plateau at the competition after collecting wins against The Citadel, Columbus State and Georgia Southern.
Columbus State finished second in the match with a score of 4538, while The Citadel and Georgia Southern (air rifle only) ended third and fourth with scores of 4484 and 2240, respectively.
"Our smallbore scores were okay, but our air rifle scores were a bit off from where they usually are," said head coach Keith Miller. "We were hoping to get in another ranking score, but the floor for that is 4604, so we fell a bit short of that goal."
Freshman Lucas Kozeniesky led the way for the Pack in the air rifle competition with a score of 585, while sophomore Daniel Cliff charted a score of 579. Sophomore Alex Martin fired a 578 and redshirt senior Amy Roderer recorded a 575. Senior Madeline Pike rounded out the lineup for State with a 574 clip. The group combined to shoot a 2317 team score in the event.
In smallbore, the Wolfpack compiled a score of 2280 as a team paced by Kozeniesky's score of 576. Martin posted the next-best mark with a 570, while Cliff and Pike each shot a 567. Roderer was the final counting shooter for NC State and tallied a score of 566.
"It was good for Lucas to get in a good performance at The Citadel's range prior to our return here for the NCAA Qualifiers in February," Miller added. "Everyone else on the team has fired some good scores here in the past, so we're glad he shot well here today. We'll all come back hear with confidence now."
NC State will return to action on Friday, Feb. 7, when it travels to West Point, N.Y., to compete against Army.
