NC State Rifle Posts Highest Score Of The Year At NCAA Collegiate Sectional
Feb. 9, 2003
The NC State rifle team continues to impress, this time by posting the highest air rifle score in school history with a 1,501 to defeat Penn State and VMI to improve to 23-5 on the season. It marked the first time that NC State has topped the 1,500 plateau. A season-high 4,336 in smallbore pushed NC State to an overall season high of 5,837. Only the top eight team scorers nationally are invited to the NCAA Championships, though the top-25 programs are ranked as well. Last season, NC State finished the season ranked 25th after firing a 5,760 in sectionals.
"Although this was a solid performance, we are not yet back up to the level where we can qualify as a team for the NCAA Championships," explained head coach Keith Miller. "Nor did we have any individual shoot a high enough score to qualify personally. However, this was anticipated and we are still on track to return to the top tier of shooting teams nationally - one of our long term goals."
NC State leads the SEARC with two matches remaining with a conference record of 14-2.
Individually, John Maroglio posted a career-best 379 in air rifle to take the top individual title for the match.
Senior Trey Ragsdale fired his second consecutive record air rifle score with a 377, marking the second straight week he has fired a 377. Ragsdale has posted five scores of 370 since November as he continues to elevate his performances.
Sophomore Ryan Dorety tied her best air score ever with a 374, which combined with her second best smallbore score of 1,084 was good enough to set a new overall personal record of 1,458.
