Dahlonega, Ga. -- The NC State rifle team had a successful start to the season, winning both matches that they competed in this weekend.
In the air rifle portion of the match on Saturday, the Pack went 5-0, defeating
The Citadel, North Georgia, Clemson, Wofford and Georgia Military.
Will Teller led the way for NC State, winning air rifle with a score of 573. He edged out teammate Bryan Cross by one point for the win. Joining Teller and Cross in the scoring were Maddy Pike (555), Martha Hall (546) and Rachel Jones (458). Jones had a deceptively low air rifle score, as one of her targets was disallowed due to it being improperly marked. The Pack came away with a team score of 2246.
Sunday, three of the schools fired smallbore, which NC State won with a team score of 2208. The Pack took spots two through five to edge out the Citadel and North Georgia for the win. NC State was led again by Teller, who took second with a score of 560. Pike was third (555) followed by Teller (548) and Jones (545).
Following the conclusion of both matches, the scores from smallbore were added to the air rifle results, resulting in a combined score of 4454 for NC State.
"Neither of our team scores were that great," said head coach Keith Miller. "We struggled in various areas, but did have solid overall performances from Will Teller, Bryan Cross, and Maddy Pike."
NC State will resume competition Saturday, Oct. 8 at SEARC 2 in Charleston, S.C.
"We're really looking forward to our next match at The Citadel," said Miller. "We should have seven shooters at this match and be firing on the excellent electronic target system at the Citadel's state of the art range. However, the level of competition will really ramp us, as Columbus State and 2010 NCAA Champions TCU will also be at the match."
