No. 14 NC State Rifle Sweeps SEARC #2
Oct. 21, 2012
MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. - The 14th-ranked NC State rifle team cruised to a straight sweep of the second Southeastern Air Rifle Conference meet of the season this weekend, shooting for a combined 4582 team score, which replicated the squad's total from their first meet of the season back on Sept. 29.
"This was our third team score of 4582 in four matches this season," said head coach Keith Miller. "It's an OK score, but a few points per person below where we need to be. Nonetheless there were some really good things for us to focus on."
The Pack combined for a 2312 air rifle score and a 2270 smallbore aggregate, with the air rifle total topping the Citadel's second place men's team who tallied a 2268 score. NC State's smallbore total bested the Citadel's 2221 score.
Junior Madeline Pike was the top shooter among all participants in both the air rifle and smallbore competitions, as she fired a personal best 587 with the air rifle and 582 in smallbore. Pike's 1169 aggregate was her second highest of the season, only behind her 1171 total against Alaska-Fairbanks.
"Maddy [Pike] has really taken her performance to a new level this year," Miller said. "She has the additional confidence gained from shooting stellar scores to combine with her existing excellent work ethic. The net result is that she now expects to shoot very good scores every time she steps up to the firing line."
Freshman Alex Martin shot a career-best 576 with the air rifle, next to a 553 in smallbore for an 1129 total, sophomore Dani Foster combined for an 1140 (572 air rifle + 568 smallbore) aggregate, and graduate student Bryan Cross posted an 1136 total score (573 air rifle + 563 smallbore). Freshman Daniel Cliff also had a strong showing, firing an 1133 (576 air rifle + 557 smallbore) at the event.
"This raised level of expectations applies not to just Maddy, but carries over to the other team members," Miller stated. "Success like that can be contagious. We need it to be, since it's necessary for us to be able to reach our goals."
The Wolfpack (11-2, 9-0 SEARC, 0-1 GARC) will take two weeks off before their next meet against third-ranked Kentucky on Nov. 3. The contest will be held in Charleston, S.C.
