No. 13 Wolfpack Rifle Falls to No. 9 Ole Miss
Nov. 11, 2012
MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – Once again, the 13th-ranked NC State rifle team set a new program record for combined team score, but the valiant effort fell just short as the ninth-ranked Ole Miss Rebels defeated the Wolfpack 4622-4609, Saturday afternoon at West Virginia University.
The Pack shot a program record in smallbore with a 2294 combined team total, which matched Mississippi's performance in the competition, and fired a 2315 aggregate in the air rifle portion of the meet. The 4609 score bested last weekend’s 4604 mark against the University of Kentucky.
"Everyone knew we were tied after smallbore, so there was a lot of pressure on the shooters for air rifle," said head coach Keith Miller. "The top two shooters for Ole Miss both finished with really strong scores, sealing their victory. Given that we set a school record in the effort, we're still very proud of our shooters. The victory over a rival GARC school would have been nice, but it will have to wait for another day."
Junior Madeline Pike notched the top overall score with a 584 score in smallbore, before matching that number in the air rifle competition, for an 1168 aggregate score to lead all NC State shooters. Sophomore Dani Foster contributed to the squad’s performance with a 574 in the smallbore competition and a 577 ledger in air rifle, for an 1151 total on the day.
Freshman Alex Martin had a nice showing in smallbore with 574 points, and finished the day with an 1147 aggregate. Freshman Daniel Cliff notched a 558 ledger in smallbore, and complemented that performance with a 578 score in the air rifle contest, for an 1136 overall total. Graduate student Bryan Cross fired a 563 in smallbore and a 567 mark in the air rifle competition for an 1132 total.
NC State will take on top-ranked West Virginia in its home shooting range on Sunday, Nov. 11. Live scoring will be available here.
