Rifle Opens 2014 Slate at Murray State
Jan. 10, 2014
RALEIGH, N.C. – The NC State rifle team will compete for the first time in the 2014 calendar year when it travels to Murray State on Saturday, Jan. 11. Columbus State will also join the two squads in competition at the Pat Spurgin Rifle Range in Murray, Ky.
“With the difficulties in scheduling, we had to set this match up earlier than we normally like to do,” said head coach Keith Miller. “Since there is such a long break between our two competition season segments, we actually brought the team back in early so that they could practice some at the end of last week and over the weekend.
“They've been very focused during these sessions, yet pretty relaxed, so I think it was a good decision. They're a bit more prepared and comfortable this way, and mentally we're happy and ready to go.”
The Wolfpack (15-5) was last in action in November of 2013 against the U.S. Naval Academy, coming up short against the Midshipmen, 4627-4596. Sophomore Daniel Cliff set a personal best at the meet with a score of 575, while classmate Alex Martin also shot a personal-record score of 582 in air rifle.
“We really wanted to get in a match at Murray State this season, as they will host the 2014 NCAA Rifle Championships in March,” Miller added. “One of our program goals is to schedule a regular-season match at the school that will host NCAAs that year, at least whenever it is practical.“
