Wolfpack Rifle Prepares for Crucial Weekend
Feb. 9, 2006
RALEIGH, N.C. - The NC State rifle team will return to action this weekend, Saturday, Feb. 11, and Sunday, Feb. 12, at the Collegiate Sectionals and NCAA Qualifying Rounds in Charleston, S.C. Saturday's event will consist of an air rifle competition that will count as an SEARC match, while Sunday will find the team competing in small bore.
"In past years, the NCAA Qualifier alone determined team NCAA ranking and invitations to the NCAA Championships," said head coach Keith Miller. "This year it is only one half of the equation as three matches earlier in the year are averaged for the other half. However, for individuals, the qualifier is it. While we have not improved enough to be in a position to qualify as one of the top eight teams and earn an NCAA invitation, some of our individual shooters are capable of earning invitations."
Miller fully expects juniors Jennifer Marshall and Matthew Gifford, as well as sophomore Thomas Knight, to shoot up to their potential, possibly qualifying for the nationals in Colorado Springs next month.
The NC State rifle team will return to Raleigh with a home match on Saturday, Feb. 18, as the team plays host to the annual Triangle Shoot Out.
