RALEIGH, N.C. - The NC State rifle team will travel to Oxford, Miss., for the Great American Rifle Conference Championships this weekend, Feb. 22-24.
"Heading into the GARC Championships our team is pretty focused," said head coach Keith Miller. "We've achieved quite a few of our season goals so far, and performing well at the conference championships at Ole Miss is the next major goal."
The Pack is coming off a record-setting performance at last weekend's NRA Sectional and NCAA qualifying meet. The squad broke the school record in the air rifle competition after firing a 2,336, before topping the team aggregate record with a 4,623 total.
"With the record score at the NCAA qualifier last week, we have a great base to build on," Miller said. "Even with it being a school record, every one of our shooters knows that they can do a little better. That kind of growth and confidence has been the hallmark for the season.
"Work hard in training, shoot well in matches, analyze how to make yourself and your teammates better, apply that through more hard work, and keep improving - that's been our model throughout the year."
NC State (32-7, 19-0 SEARC, 1-5 GARC) will compete among most of the nation's elite programs, as the seven other programs in which the Pack will compete against received bids to the NCAA Championships.
"To get better you want to compete against the best, and the best place to do that in college rifle is in the Great America Rifle Conference," said Miller. "It's one of the primary reasons that we continue to improve and break records."
