RALEIGH, N.C. – The NC State rifle team, ranked 15th in the most recent Collegiate Rifle Coaches Association (CRCA) poll, has been rigorously preparing for the NCAA Qualifier match this weekend at The Citadel. The match will also serve as the sixth Southeastern Air Rifle Conference (SEARC) competition for the squad.

“It's been an up and down season so far,” said head coach Keith Miller. “How we do this weekend will have a lot to do with our ranking for the postseason. We have several individuals that could potentially qualify for the NCAA Championships on their own, as Dani Foster did two years ago.  If you peak in this one match, you can still earn a spot.

“That said, our main team goal is to post a strong overall performance and move up a spot or two in the rankings.  If we do that, some of the individual scores might be in the range to receive an invitation - which would be great.  However, all we have control over is our own performance, so that is what we're focused on.”

The air rifle competition is slated to get underway on Saturday, Feb. 22 at 8 a.m. inside the Inuoye Markmanship Center. Sunday, the Wolfpack will compete in the smallbore competition set to commence at 8 a.m. as well. The scores from both days will be combined to derive the NCAA Qualifier score.

The NCAA Qualifier score will consist of 50 percent of the NCAA ranking score and the other half consists of the three highest scores fired during the year at different sites. For individual shooters, the qualifier score alone will determine whether or not they receive an invitation to compete in the NCAA Championships.

“Practices have been good after we got past the snow last week, everyone is pretty well-rested both physically and mentally, and those with injuries have almost fully recovered,” Miller said.  “Our attitude is good, our spirits are high, and we've done a good job preparing for the match.  The rest we'll figure out on the range.”

NC State enters the weekend with a 20-9 overall record on the season, including a perfect 13-0 mark against SEARC opponents.
