Feb. 27, 2014
RALEIGH, N.C. – The NC State rifle team will travel to Oxford, Miss., this weekend for the 2014 Great America Rifle Conference (GARC) Championships hosted by Ole Miss. The event runs Friday through Sunday.
Ole Miss will serve as the host for the 10th consecutive year, with action taking place at the Patricia C. Lamar National Guard Readiness Center.
Joining the Wolfpack (28-9, 19-0 SEARC, 0-7 GARC) at the match will be other conference opponents, Army, Kentucky, Memphis, Navy, Nebraska, Ole Miss and West Virginia.
This season the GARC has proved to be one of the best conferences in the country, as all league foes are currently ranked in the top 20, including the top-ranked and defending national champion West Virginia Mountaineers.
Last season, the Pack fired a 4619 as a team to finish eighth overall at the championships. The Mountaineers won the 2013 event with a score of 4705.
Senior Madeline Pike paced the squad in both disciplines, firing a 586 in the air rifle competition and a personal-best score of 585 in smallbore.
In NC State’s last outing, the program finished first at the NRA Sectional and sixth Southeastern Air Rifle Conference (SEARC) match of the season. As a team, the Pack charted a score of 4606 led by Pike’s mark of 585 in air rifle and freshman Lucas Kozeniesky’s 578 clip in smallbore.
The individual smallbore events will be held on Friday, while the team smallbore and individual air rifle competitions will be on Saturday. Sunday, the team air rifle relays will convene, followed by the team air rifle finals later in the day.
