CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. - The No. 23 NC State men's swim team started off the ACC Championships strong on Wednesday, setting a new school record and achieving a podium finish in the 800-freestyle relay.
Jonathan Boffa, David Williams, Matt Thomas and Brandon Kingston swam a time of 6:25.67 in the 800-freestyle relay, topping the old record by over four seconds, and achieving an NCAA B standard. The relay team finished third in the event. Boffa's lead-off split of 1:36.26 was good for the second-best time in the 200 freestyle in school history.
Ivan Kopas, Ian Bishop, Barrett Miesfeld and Joe Martin combined to swim a time of 1:28.19 in the 200-medley relay, good for seventh place.
"We had two good relays to start off the meet," said head coach Braden Holloway. "They had pretty consistent splits. I'm really proud of the 800-free relay for racing from start to finish and challenging themselves to get on the podium and smash the school record.
"We look forward to carrying the momentum on to tomorrow."
NC State is in a three-way tie for fourth place after the first day of competition. Live coverage of the finals on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday can be seen on theACC.com starting at 7:20 p.m. Live stats are also available HERE.
