Mumma Qualifies for NCAA Championships at Diving Zones

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - NC State sophomore diver Rachel Mumma punched her ticket to the NCAA Championships on Monday with a second-place finish on the three-meter diving board at the 2013 NCAA Diving Zone B Qualifying meet, held at the Allan Jones Aquatic Center on the campus of the University of Tennessee.
"Congrats to Rachel on her outstanding performance and to Coach Josh Karshen (Diving Coach) for his first NCAA qualifier," said head coach Braden Holloway. "She and Hudson Rains led the way today and put themselves in great position to advance to the NCAA's."
Mumma finished with a combined score of 670.70 in the finals, after posting the second-best mark in the preliminaries with a 338.00 to advance to the finals.
Junior Hannah Hopkins also competed in the event, recording a score of 271.05 to finish 19th, narrowly missing the mark to qualify for the finals.
On the men's side, senior Hudson Rains notched the fifth-best score on the one-meter board in the preliminaries with a 307.50 to qualify for the finals. Rains finished with a combined score of 624.25 in the finals to remain fifth. Freshman Charles Retter registered a mark of 245.95 in the prelims.
"We're excited to have four members of the squad competing at the diving zones," Holloway added. "All of them have prepared for this meet as their main meet of the season, as success at zones is key to an NCAA berth."
The NCAA Diving Zone B Qualifying meet will continue on Tuesday, Mar. 12, starting with the women's one-meter prelims at 11 a.m. followed by the finals beginning at 1:15 p.m. For the men, the three-meter prelims will commence at 3:30 p.m. with the finals slated for 5:25 p.m.
