AUSTIN, Texas - The NC State men's swimming team finished 13th overall in the 2014 NCAA Championships team standings with 113.5 points, as competition wrapped up Saturday evening at the Lee & Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center.

The finish was the highest for the Wolfpack since the 1978-79 team claimed 11th and betters last seasons 15th place performance. State also finished as the top Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) school in the standings for the second consecutive season.

"Congratulations to our men's swimming & diving team at NCAA's, finishing in 13th place and bettering their position from last year," said head coach Braden Holloway.

California (468.5) won the NCAA Championship, while Texas (417.5), Florida (387), Michigan (310) and Georgia (259) rounded out the top five.

With the men's 13th place finish and the women's 16th place performance last week, this season is the first campaign in the program's history that each squad finished among the top-20 teams at the NCAA Championships in the same season.

"This weekend started a little rough, but I'm proud of how these guys fought for every single point," Holloway said. "They didn't give up after the beginning when they got off to a slow start."

The Wolfpack 400 freestyle relay team consisting of Simonas Bilis, David Williams, Jonathan Boffa and Andreas Schiellerup closed the meet with a third place finish in a time of 2:49.50. The quartet bettered its own school record that was set earlier this month at the ACC Championships in Greensboro, N.C. In addition, Bilis bettered his previous school record of 42.25 in the 100 freestyle with a leadoff split of 42.19. The team also earns first-team All-American honors with the finish.

"We obviously finished on a great note with that 400 free relay," Holloway said. "We broke the ACC record in the event and Simonas Bilis broke the ACC record with his leadoff time in the 100 freestyle. It was just a great way to finish the meet."

Sophomore Christian McCurdy finished as an All-American in the 200 butterfly with a fourth-place finish in the event in a time of 1:42.18. McCurdy competed the morning preliminaries fourth overall with a time of 1:42.53.

Stephen Coetzer earned a spot in the `B' final of the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:40.94 in the morning preliminaries. He returned for the finals session to finish fifth in the heat and 13th overall, as he tapped the wall in a time of 1:41.30. With the finish, Coetzer earns honorable mention All-American honors in the event.

Bilis finished third in the `B' final and 11th overall in the 100 freestyle with a finals time of 42.42. Bilis finishes the 2014 NCAA Championships as an All-American in the 50 and 100 freestyle events, in addition to the 400 and 800 freestyle relay teams.

Boffa and freshman Soren Dahl, who joined the program in January, also competed in the prelims of the 100 free. Boffa finished 22nd overall with a time of 42.97, while Dahl completed the event in a time of 44.53 to place 41st.

Throughout the three-day competition, eight of the nine swimmers to compete for the Wolfpack earned either honorable mention or first-team All-American honors. Bilis and Williams each led the way with four All-American honors, while Miesfeld and Shiellerup leave Austin with three.

"We're adding new names to our All-American list and we're proud of that," Holloway said. "We're adding guys with multiple All-American status, which is a great achievement for our guys.

"I also want to congratulate our seniors. They've been the driving force in this rise in the national rankings. Barrett Miesfeld, Ian Bishop, Jonathan Boffa and Matt Thomas were here this week and I want to congratulate the seniors."
